Turkey May 2005 - The Mediterranean |
From Termessos we drove the rest of the afternoon and reached the Mediterranean at Finike - the drive between Finike and Demre is pretty hair-raising, and apparently used to be even worse before they widened the road.....Reached Kas (pronounced Cash) at 7pm, and went straight out to find an internet cafe and some sunscreen. The hotel was lovely, with amazing views over the sea from the top floor. Woke early the next morning - the muezzin in Kas takes his job VERY seriously, no recorded messages for him - the early morning call went for over twenty minutes straight....I got up to explore the town at dawn. Very beautiful - fishing boats were heading out, and the cats and dogs were wandering round the town with very few people about.
The Gulet
Kas
We left Kas after breakfast the next morning, and headed to Kalkan for a brief stop before Fethiye and then to Gocek to board the gulet. Kalkan was very pretty, but also incredibly expensive and touristy, Fethiye was more touristy again - full of british tourists decorated with varying degrees of sunburn! Cengiz (our driver) had had a bit of an altercation with another car, that turned out to be driven by an off duty policeman, so he was delayed trying to sort that out, but soon we were on our way to Gocek and on to the boat. The next few days were just relaxing, with excellent food, and beautiful locations. The sea was pretty cold, but the water was wonderfully clear and we had perfect sunny days. |
